Trying to find vacuum actuators for the A/C, and other stuff

Postby greg pettit on Sat May 17, 2008 6:30 pm

Wow, let me just say that a/c parts for a factory air car are really hard to come by.

There are three vacuum actuators on the air plenum in the engine compartment. Two of the actuators on my car are bad. I have tried searching everywhere and can't find a source for these.

So, I just put the one remaining functional actuator to work on the heat/air selector door.

Looks like the fresh air/recirculate flap is gonna be set to full time recirculate, and whatever the third actuator hooks to isn't gonna work either.

I have been searching for a heater core as well, but the only one I found is on ebay at 119.00. Seems steep? So I may just clean this one up and reinstall it.

So, if anyone knows a source for the actuators or a heater core, I would certainly like to get that info....

Hi Greg,
You might want to try these guys:
http://www.allamericanclassics.com/request.html

I think I saw 3 or 4 '60 Oldsmobiles on their list. I need to call them one of these days and see if they have that drivers side door trim I've been looking for since I got the car  . Otherwise I'll keep an eye out on Ebay for you...I look there all the time just to see what's out there.

Here's a heater box from a guy parting out a '60 88...you might want to check and see if he has any other heater parts...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1960-60- ... 242842542&

As for the heater core, that does seem high. You might want to check your local radiator shops and see what they would it would run to boil it out...it's got to be less than that.

Oh, you might also try Classic Auto Parts in Hayden, Idaho...they've had a '60 there for years (I got some parts off it a long time ago). They don't ever seem to crush anything, and they might have some heater parts left on it. Worth a phone call anyway.

New, USA Autoparts might have something. I did find a supplier but, can't locate the info.
Used, I haven't had much luck and not sure if I'd trust.

Deluxe=pain to get working.

I ended up pull a pile of extra vac hose from a salvage yard. I went in for other things but, when I saw the hose... had to have it. I've yet to find a hose that will fit behind the dash neatly and fit. Also, the vac hose is a pain to fit all five hoses on to the control (at the dash) if the hose gage is too thick. I guess, what I'm saying... grab vac hose if you get the chance.

Thanks for the parts leads, I will definitely be checking those.

As for the actuators, I got to looking at some of the Torino stuff I had stashed.

Well, I found that the defrost actuator will work for the fresh air/recirc actuator. AND, since it is a two stage actuator, it will do the job of the third actuator as well!

I love it when junk laying around has a use.

You're right...I replaced a bunch of the hoses on my Deluxe heater last fall, and the new vacuum hoses that are available (at least locally) have a larger OD than the original ones. They won't go through the factory firewall grommet :x . At least without some modification to it.

Glad you'll be able to get it working! Having a pile of "stuff" can be a real lifesaver. I've moved so many times I've had to dump most of my extra bits and pieces. I used to have everything from engine blocks and heads, to wiring harnesses. About all I have now are extras for my Willys Jeep project...I have several extra transmissions and transfer cases, a Powerlok carrier, extra wheels, etc. It's all stuff I acquired in the last few years. I do have a large bucket of old nuts and bolts that's saved my butt a few times when I needed some miscellaneous bolt after the hardware stores have all closed  .

Well, today's the big day for the heating and air conditioning.

Got the entire thing put back together last night and drove the car around the block a few times. The brakes are working great, but my bro says the power assist is kinda weak. So, we're gonna be looking at that.

But, the heat and air is all reassembled, all I need to do is reinstall the dash controls and hook up the vacuum lines. Then a little electrical troubleshooting and hopefully we have some kind of climate control.

Does anyone have a source for the canvas ducting for the defroster vents? Doesn't have to be canvas, of course, it just has to fit.

Awesome, but where's the pics? . Good question on the ducting...IIRC it's about 3"? Mine are crusty, but still intact so I just left them alone. Here's the price list from USA Parts supply for heater ducting:

AIR CONDITIONING/DEFROSTER HOSE AND DUCT
S9.262A All 1 1/2" X 6' 51.80
S9.262B All 1 3/4" X 6' 54.79
S9.262C All 2" X 6' 49.93
S9.262D All 2 1/4" x 6' 53.11
S9.262E All 2 1/2" X 6' 41.33
S9.262F All 2 3/4" X 6' 52.36
S9.262G All 3" X 6' 52.36
S9.262H All 3 1/4" X 6' 60.21
S9.262J All 3 1/2" X 6' 69.38

Not cheap, but could be worse...at least you get 6' of it. You might also check your local HVAC type supplier and see what kind of ducting they have available. Here's the URL for USA parts...you can just download their catalog.
