Gas tank

Postby hotrodgirl on Thu Jan 15, 2009 5:36 pm

So, I've got a leaker!!! Funny since I was told the car had a "new" gas tank!!!! Got under her lastnite and it's not new, and there looks to be a JB Weld patch job which is no longer working (probably from the cold weather)..... A little choked to say the least.... :x

So, now I am on the hunt.... checking out a local repair place for a quote on fixing it but was also looking to see what a new tank would cost.... Anybody happen to have the dimensions handy????? Long shot, I know... I will have to measure when I get home.... I have a local Hot Rod Shop here that deals with Tanks Inc. and they show a tank for a 59-60 Chev passenger car..what do you guiys think the odds of it fitting??? Another reason why I need the dimensions... Will keep ya posted...

Don't laugh at this, but I fixed a pinkole leak in my other car's gas tank with some tank sealing stuff from the auto parts store.

It is a two part paste, knead it together, cram it in the hole, and it hardens. Even in the presence of gasoline.

If you can get the old epoxy off there, it can't hurt to try the tank repair goop.

Good luck,

Greg

So, what is it with these 60 Olds? Rare birds, I say. My tank was hosed up too. Not leaking but, the sending unit was shot. So, me and the kid dropped it and took it for a tumble/treatment before replacing the sending unit. Finding the sending unit was fun. (not) I found a couple of places with the units but not the sock filter part. I ended up buying based on the size, from Late Great Chevy.
I would be interested to know if you find or know of a place that has new tanks. I've got cash earmarked for other stuff but, tanks are really critical for these old cars.

I'd say there's a pretty good chance it would fit...there's a few parts GM used in all the big car lines in '59 and '60. There was a lot of cross over for the glass in these cars-- windshields, side windows. Some of the chassis parts interchange too. I wouldn't be surprised if the gas tank was universal...but I can't say for sure unfortunately. You might see if a radiator shop could do the repair...if it's just a small hole, they could probably weld or braze it shut. If it's bigger, you could weld a patch over it. If it was mine I'd probably drop the tank, take the sending unit out, wash it out with water (a few times ) , and then fill it full of water up to the hole and weld it shut. Keep us updated...I'm curious what you figure out.
Cheers,

Well, I dropped the tank and took it into the Rad Shop... Cash deal of $280 to clean, weld, line and paint it...she looks about new now.. put it back in by myself I might add... hahaha, threw in some gas, a little down the carb and she fired up...not bad after sitting, covered in snow for a month...at one point there was probably 3 feet of the white crap on her....

BUT, i forgot about that small issue of coolant leaking.... I recalled after there was coolant all over the driveway.... so I am thinking I will be replacing the frost plug....I hope that is all it is....keep ya'll posted....

Price sounds about right, and at least you won't have to worry about it agin  . My poor car hasn't been started in...maybe 3 months? It's still cocooned in my garage waiting for the Great Thaw to come :x .

We're at 44 degrees this weekend. I will start the olds.
On a sad note, I was shopping for a 1976 Omega Brougham. Nice car. My Saturn just sucked 600.00 out for "emission shit"
I'm going to have to take all the Saturn crap off the car and replace it with Olds. Check it out, doesn't the Saturn look a lot like the last Olds?
