Found a complete '61 olds with a skyrocket 394 in it. Will this engine/trans bolt into my '60?

It looks like this engine is a '63, not a '61.

If the motor mounts are in the same place, it should go right in, in my opinion.

I guess what I am wanting to know is if there were different mountings and accessory bosses on different years of 394's.

I believe this engine is a 1963 because it has an aluminum water pump and is labeled as a "skyrocket" ultra high compression engine on the air cleaner.

It is also painted red with chrome valve covers.

It looks like it uses the same front engine mount as the 371 in the '60, but it's kinds hard to tell for sure.

Here's a pic of the engine, it is in a 1961 Super 88.

That's sort of funny that you're checking out a different motor. Ultra High. Is that 11:1?
I've got a '64 four door Super88 on my radar. It's got a 394. I'm guessing four barrel. I'm thinking, even as a four door, it should have things in common. I want a driver. Not sure how to get it in to the conversation with the wife. I really don't "need" a driver. My Saturn is doing fine. The other option might be to take it to her brother's place and mess with it. Turn it back out for even or better money. Hmm. :evil:

If this engine is what I think it is, it is 330 HP and 10.5:1 compression.

The only reason I'm looking right now is the 371 in our car now has a little mechanical noise in it, maybe loose bearings or something.

If I'm going to have to pull the engine and rebuild, I might as well work with a high output 394 instead of the low po 371.

This is all hinging on two things, will the engine fit the car, and can I make a good deal on the purchase of this 1961 Super 88....

Greg,

It is a little diffficult to give you a definitive answer, based on the info/pics provided. Even so, I'll take a 2d plunge!

My 1960 Olds came from the factory with a 394 c.i. engine, so they were not unheard of in 1960. In looking at the pic of the 63 engine, do I not see the fuel pump on the lower left, below the A/C compressor? While it has been years ago, I do not recall my f1960 fuel pump being in that location. If I am correct, I sure would want to know if that is going to be a problem before I buy.

Compression ratio was a result of using different pistons. I am certain the bore x stroke remained the same. Again, if I am correct, the 63 394 block should be the same as the 1960 394 block.

Don't know if any of that helps, but ....

I think any 394 will physically bolt into the car, but there were some changes in '61 to watch for...different exhaust manifold bolt pattern, flex plate tooth count, etc. It looks like it wouldn't just be a drop in, but the things you'd need to watch for would probably be pretty minor. Well within your mechanical ability :mrgreen: . You shouldn't be welding new mounts in or anything. I totally agree on putting the bigger motor in there though. If you're not worried about originality, the later 394 would really wake that car up.
