Changing Oil Plan Gasket

Postby misercola on Tue Feb 16, 2010 6:19 pm

Has anyone had any experience changing an oil pan gasket on a 394? I'm pretty sure mine is leaking and picked up a gasket at Fusick's over the weekend. Talked to a couple of friends later on who said there could be a lot to move around. My Motor's flat rate manual had it down for a couple of hours of work (at least back in 1960) but was wondering if anyone has done this already and could advise?

Thanks,
Mark

I've Never done my 60 but it looks to me that it would be fairly easy on a 1960 Olds 88. Some cars mostly newer stuff (1964 and up) the front crossmember is in the way but not in the 60 Olds. I would think couple hours or so would do it. Good luck

Thanks ... that's my sense too. Hopefully it won't be all the entailed and I can get it done with the oil change.

In order to get the pan off, and out, I suspect you will have to undo some of the steering linkage. It is not a simple unscrew a few bolts job.

Also, the leak may be coming from the rear seal on the engine. As long as you have the pan dropped, you should put a new seal in. They do (or at least used to) make a tool for removing/installing the seal without having to lower the crankshaft.

Good luck!

I pulled mine off after I rebuilt my engine and it was back in the car...that stupid rope seal rear main was leaking on my fresh engine and that made me mad enough to try and replace it in-car. I don't remember any particular difficulty getting the pan off the car, but that was a long time ago... I don't remember needing to drop any of the front end, but I could be wrong. I'll try to remember to check my FSM tonight and see if it says anything. I replaced the rear main seal, and...it still leaks  . I gave up, and decided it was just going to drip a little bit. There is supposed to be a neoprene two-piece replacement seal for these available now, which would have been a real life saver if they'd been around when I was doing mine.
The hardest part of replacing an oil pan gasket in car is just trying to get everything clean...really clean that whole area as best you can before you start taking the bolts out. Have your oil pan hot-tanked by a machine shop (shouldn't cost more than a few bucks for one part). That will get it nice and clean and save you the time and trouble of trying to scrape the old gasket off. It's critical that you get the old gasket off the engine block, and getting it all off can be...difficult. Get a decent razor scraper and just plan on taking your time. Wear safety glasses. Having a blob of greasy dirt fall in your eye when you're under there isn't as much fun as it sounds. Don't over tighten your bolts when you put the pan back on. Don't get too frustrated when the gasket slips and you have a hard time getting it all back together :P . Oh, and take pics so we can see!

Thanks for all the good advice. We're going to be looking at it soon. The leak isn't huge and some of my cruising buddies are telling me to live with it ("old cars leak") but I'd like to eliminate this as a source. Also, the cold weather in the North East zapped my battery a couple of weeks ago (I was hoping to get the old one to last until Spring) and I've sprung for a reproduction Delco with the yellow caps. It came in the other day from Ohio and I'm charging it now. The thing is big! Looking forward to wrestling it into place this weekend.

Mark

I've pretty much just come to grips with my car dripping a little...Some day when I have lots of free time maybe I'll replace that rear main again, but I've got bigger things to worry about before I tackle that again (like finishing the interior). The battery I have in mine is this giant Standard Battery that I got...geeze, must be more than 10 years ago. Still starts the car every time, even after sitting all winter  . Nobody had a book to say what size it needed, so I just took my battery tray down to the store with me and found one that fit it (the car was still taken apart at that point). Now, I'm a little worried...when I have to replace it, it looks like it's going to be a pretty tight squeeze getting it out  . That bar of the core support goes over the battery, and I think I'm going to have to at least pull the PS pump and brackets out in order to make room. Hopefully that's all I need to do  .

Am replacing my battery this weekend. Got a Delco that looks like the one that came with the car (yellow battery caps) and have it all charged up. Am a little nervous about arcing with the cross beam running over the top of it so I'm working with a friend who has a 1953 Olds to make sure I don't blow myself up.

Will let you know how it goes.

Let us know how it went... If nothing else, you can always put a big blob of tape on the terminals to make sure they don't touch anything. It's surprising how much juice a car battery has in it...I've got a couple of tools with signs they've been arc welded to something from battery mishaps  . Oh, and don't forget to polarize your voltage regulator after you hook the battery back up...
