Need to replace transmission cooling lines

Postby misercola on Wed Apr 28, 2010 1:53 pm

I'm trying to replace my tranmssion cooling lines with period correct lines. The one that the car came from appear to be make shift. I've triend InLine Tube but no luck. They have everything up to 59 and after 61. Has anyone run into this and come across a supplier?

Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,
Your best bet is probably actually a junkyard or used parts supplier...or ebay. People part cars on ebay all the time, and you can always ask if they'd pull the tranny lines for you. Shipping will probably cost more than the lines  . '59 and '60 should be identical so either would work. Going on memory here... There are two metal lines, and I can't remember if only one end or both ends have rubber lines connected to them. The rubber lines might be in bad shape and need to be replaced. I found an NOS pair for mine, but I think repros are out there. I seem to remember getting mine back in the car was a real bear, although I can't remember exactly why it was so hard. Tight spaces maybe?
Let us know how it goes...

Hi Scott,

I was wondering if 59 and 60 were identical lines. InLine Tubing has them for the 59 and if they're interchangable I can order those instead. The rubber lines came from Fusick and they would work on a '59 as well.

Appreciate the insight here.

Mark

Under the skin '59 and '60 are basically the same car, so they *should* work. I'd be shocked if they didn't work...the drivetrains for both cars are the same. Wonder why they wouldn't list them for both years...

Check page 4 of InLine Tube's catalog. They have everything up to 1960 and then it says "CALL." I called and they said they didn't carry anything for the 60. I'm finding this to be the case on a number of parts. The hood to cowl lacing is another example. I have it on my car but it's getting brittle. When I check the parts catalogs every other year is there (including 59) but nothing for 60. It's frustrating and there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. Met a guy over the weekend who just sold a 98 convertible after 10 years. He got tired of chasing the catalogs and bought a parts car from Texas. I wish I had the room for one.

I totally understand. If you think it's bad now, you should have seen what it was like when I got mine back in '96  . Just the other day I was thinking "Wow, there's a lot more repro stuff for the '60 now" . For the longest time, there was virtually nothing for '59 and '60. They were like the lost years... I had to scrounge Hemmings, junkyards, etc. Got a bunch of stuff from Dick Major himself. There was no ebay, or really any internet back then. I did subscribe to the old Oldsmobile internet mailing list, but I was pretty much the only "big car" guy on there...everybody had a G body. I had to get body parts from Idaho, that was the closest place with junkyard that had a '60. Got some engine parts locally off a '64 Olds with a 394. Ug. At least we have the internet now :P . I actually had a guy who wanted to trade me straight across for my Olds with a '64 Impala two door hardtop. It had quite a bit of cancer, but was original and straight. Would have been sooooooo much easier to restore. But, then I would have had just another '64 Chebby  .
Finding parts for these is a challenge...but I guess that's the price you pay for being different. I still haven't found the door molding I need LOL. For your cowl lacing, you might see if you could make one for a '59 work...there probably isn't much difference dimensionally. Might help if you could get measurements for a '59...

I fabricated those pipes myself, even though I didn't have 3/8" pipe available, everything here is metric so I had to use 10mm pipe stock. But I did it while the engine was off so fitting them and installing was quite easy. I just used pipe bender for tighter curves, for the rest I found suitable bending radius knees, thighs or belly. And you couldn't distinguish them from original ones if they weren't stainless. The original pipes don't really look like professionally made, so yours might be original as well.
