This car had some pretty serious rust in some places, and in other places bare steel was gleaming as if it was brand new. Strange, but true.

The floors were rusted out, but that wasn't too bad to fix.

The trunk weatherstrip channel was completely wasted between the taillights. I didn't get a good pic of the damage while it was still in the car, but here's the piece after removal, and the rusty channel is evident. In some areas, it is completely gone.

This is what the seam behind the bumper looked like. The upper section was rusted away, but the lower section it was spot welded to was just fine.

Found a little rust in the fenders, as well.

Got patch panels cut out and welded in to replace the rusted steel.

This fender had quite a story to tell. First off, there was about 1/2" of lead filling some serious crumpling from a previous incident. On top of that was another 1/4" of Bondo from the next incident, or perhaps a poor attempt to cover up the rust hole. We are going to need to use a lot of filler here, but at least the rusty section has been replaced with good steel.

Gonna take a break on the olds for a few days here and tend to some other stuff. The Wife's car blew a front strut yesterday, so today the shop is a Eurpoean car repair facility. Tomorrow is a big drag race for us at the Texas Motorplex, and Sunday is Lake Day.

Next week should see some straightening and some filler applied to the car.

I always feel "blessed" for the fact that our car really was pretty much free of rust. Even when it was stripped down. It's body was in better shape than most forty eight year olds! (get it, Olds)
I also think it's cool that you guys dig these cars so much. I just sort of "fell" in to my Olds. I was shopping for a Pontiac. Friggin' Pontiacs are about three times the price for a junk heap. But, I could have cloned it to be a 2+2 or GTO! Sort of like fake boobs. Nice to look at but in the end, they aren't real.
I sure hope we can meet in Lansing or some place some day. I'd love to see all these cars together.

Yikes!! That rear lip was a mess!! :shock: . Pretty sure I've never seen on that bad. "Normal" rust on a '60 Olds is usually in the fenders where you patched them, and rear quarter bottoms. Someone at GM thought it would be a good idea to drain the cowl into that area at the bottom of the fenders...not good once dirt collects in the brace behind it. I had to patch both of mine exactly like you did. Fortunately, other than the rusted out floor I replaced the car was pretty solid. That trunk lip is a weird one though...

Great work on the car though! And thanks for posting all the pics...it's really neat to see how well your car is coming along.

It's funny...I just sort of "fell" onto my Olds as well. But, it was love at first sight :mrgreen: . And I'm with you on the clone cars... My brother in law and his dad have a '66 Chevelle they're restoring...with the original 283/powerglide and all it's 2 barrel glory! I told them that I thought it was really cool they were doing it stock...it seems like everyone that builds one these days has to make it an SS/396 clone or something. Not that it wouldn't be fun to have a big block Chevelle...but it's just sort of different to have one that's bone stock. They've got a bunch of fun stuff...he took me for a ride in his '55 Chevy with dual quads and a 4 speed. It took a while to get the grin off my face.
