Door Panels

Postby OldsD88 on Sat Oct 03, 2009 1:54 pm

I report this, as I know some of you may have an interest (super88dan). Yesterday I took the plunge and forked over the dough to have SMS make new door panels for me. All I am able to report now is the cost to do so is $495. This is less than the usual $650, or whatever it is, as I am only have the 2 door panels done, not the backseat, rear quarter armrests.

So now, it is incumbent on me to remove the door panels and ship them off to SMS in OR. Finding a container for them may be a bit of a project in itself?

I shall keep you posted, but I suspect it will be a while before I have anything to report.

Yes, definitely keep us updated...I still need a full set for mine, although it's probably going to be out of my budget for a (long) while. I actually still need to find another pair of rear panels...the ones I have are from an 88, and are about 4" too short for my 98. I need to find another set of arm rests for the front too...

Well, here is what I can tell you so far:

The box needed to ship the panels has to have dimensions of 45" L x 24" W x 2 1/2" D. I had to buy a bicycle box at the local UPS store. Cost of box - $15.96, and it weighs 7 lbs. by itself! It is larger than what I need, I shall be trimming it down to make a box the size I need; both to reduce weight/size and to lower the shipping cost.

PROGRESS REPORT: The shipping container (box) was fabricated yesterday. That, in itself was 2 hr. project! The panels are now (7 Oct) on their way to SMS in Camby; OR, via UPS Ground. They are scheduled to arrive on Tues., 13 Oct.

I advised SMS of the delivery schedule by email. In that email I did request that when the panels are returned I also be furnished, at no additional cost, enough material to recover my armrest pads. To my surprise, SMS responded, the very same day, agreeing to furnish the needed vinyl material. <= That is a plus for them, in my book!

Now, it is sit and wait. I will not even look for the panels to be returned until late Dec., or in January. We shall see?

I have decided I would like to place clear plastic washers under the screws that hold the panel at the door bottom, in order to try and prevent them from, ultimately, going through the panel. Any idea where I might find such critters?

Sounds good. It's never fun to ship big things...I've done a lot of business on ebay and I'm now only trying to sell small things :). For the washers, it probably won't be hard to find plastic ones that will work but finding them in clear might be a challenge. You might check these guys:
www.grainger.com
www.smallparts.com
www.fastenercomponents.com/

If all else fails, you can always make your own...the hard part might be finding the right thickness of material. If you have to make your own, use Lexan...it's shatterproof, very scratch resistant, and easy to work with. Kind of expensive, but you wouldn't need much.

Scott,

I have already looked for online, and found, Lexan washers. The question is the right size. I think I will try my local hardware store first, to see if I can actually "lay eyes" on them.

Well, UPS confirmed the door panels were received by SMS yesterday, 13 Oct.

So, no the countdown begins, and the clock is ticking.

Dan,

The door panels are sitting in my storage shed and they look absolutely fantastic! Hopefully, they shall go on soon.

You have a storage shed too! Yowsa.
Let me know when you pull 'em out. I'll come check it out.
Hey, we're putting new leaf springs on the old car this weekend.
Should go well.

Leaf springs, eh? Always a fun job! Hopefully, it will go without hassle. Once done, you may need to readjust your rear view mirror.

Still waiting.
There was a rumor that my material would ship and be delivered by Friday the 8th of April. Here it is the 18th. Tornado must have thrown the delivery vehicle of course.
As for the doors, see mentioned that they usually take 4-6 months. I can't remember hearing that when I spoke to them in January. Hmm. I'd better check my hearing.

whatever. I'm hoping to find a seat to take my car to cruise nights, as is. A buddy has a seat from a truck. Our cars are a bit odd, the wells aren't like most cars.

Dan,

Do have a contact name at SMS? I did, a guy named Phil. Whenever I had a concern I fired off an email, to which he usually replied very promptly. I would sending an inquiry on the shipping date.
