Cardboard Trunk Lining

Postby misercola on Tue Jun 22, 2010 9:11 pm

The cardboard trunk lining in my Super 88 is looking every bit like its 50 years old. I'd like to replace it but am not having any luck finding replacements. When I was at Fusick's last they suggested a couple of companies that do upholstery but they don't have the cardboard. Has anyone struck paydirt on this?

Thanks,
Mark

I'm pretty sure that the trunk cardboard is one of the "orphan" parts for the '60 that nobody is currently producing... Mine was trashed too...what was left of it anyway (half of it was missing). When I bought the car, there was torn down Chevy 350 sitting in the trunk (no joke), block and all. What a mess  . You can see what I did with my trunk here: http://www.1960oldsmobile.com/?page_id=144 . Scroll down to "trunk repair". At least it's painted now... If you have all the pieces, you could make templates from them. It might take some digging, but finding a similar cardboard material shouldn't be that hard (or that expensive really). You could try and find a fabric that's got a similar pattern to the original cardboard, and glue it on--3M makes an excellent spray on adhesive that I used to install my headliner that would be perfect for something like that. It might not be a perfect solution, but it sure beats nasty cardboard that's falling apart. The only people who would know the difference would be other '60 Olds owners :). I've seen other people do carpet and that sort of treatment... Looks/works fine, but it's nothing like the original.
If anybody out there has a complete cardboard set (even if it's in bad shape) I'd love to see some templates...

Thanks Scott. I may just give the template thing a try. Mine are in good enough shape that I could use them as templates. There's a place in Alabama -- Auto Customs Carpets -- that sells the pattern in a vynl wrap. Too bad no one makes the cardboard. Nice job, btw, on your restoration. Do you make house calls???

My suggestion is to not overlook the obvious. I do not know if it applies to the 1960 model year, but for my '62, many Chevrolet Impala parts are interchangeable. I needed new armrest bases. Don't even think of trying to find such for a 1962 Oldsmobile. However, they are readily available for a 1962 Chevrolet Impala. The same may be true with the trunk lining you want?

Good suggestion. I recently obtained an interchange manual that covers all of the GM cars from this era and I'll do some research and see if the trunk lining may have been a shared part/feature. Many thanks.

Interesting idea...in the early '60s there was some parts interchange across most GM models in a given year. IIRC, the glass is the same for Pontiac, Buick, Olds, and Chevy, as are the rocker panels... I've never looked into what the other lines did with their trunks in 1960, but they might very well be a similar shape.
If you do decide to make new ones, could you take some pictures of your old ones while they're out of the car? I'd like to make a set for mine someday, and I don't really have anything to work with...
Cheers,
Scott

Absolutely. Will need to do some research on cardboard suppliers. I think the stuff we have is a little thicker than the boxes at Costco.

BTW, I'm almost done repainting under the hood. Fusick's is now carrying the original Olds Aqua engine enamel that was standard on the car when it was built and I picked up a few cans earlier this month. It went on really well and dried up nicely. I'm finishing up some of the surrounding elements with Eastwood underhood coating. Next up is to replace all the radiator hoses and put old style spring clamps on. If all is well then it's off to Sturbridge, Mass. later this month for the Olds national meet. It will be the longest drive I've had the car since I got it two years ago and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that all goes well. I took the car to Fusicks in Hartford when I got the paint. It's about 90 miles from the house and the drive went well. Sturbridge is a little beyond that.

Stay well!

Finding the right cardboard might be the hard part...you might want to check online and see what you can find. I would think that box and cardboard distributors would list the specs for everything...if you could mic a piece from your car I would think you should be able to find something pretty similar.

Sounds like the rest of it is coming together nicely... Good luck going to Sturbridge...I've never made a trip that long in my Olds. I'm sure it will be fine though...these cars were made to cruise :P . Oh, and I do make house calls...but that far away, it's not gonna be cheap  .

I understand there's one other 60 showing up and it will be good to compare notes. Longest ride I've had mine on is about 70 miles to Fusick's -- a few weeks ago -- and it did fine. Sturbridge is about 25 miles further. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Stay well.
